Steroid therapy

A slight complication in the diagnosis of diabetes is that cats often show a temporary increase in blood sugar as a result of stress (referred to as ‘stress hyperglycaemia’). Generally, this is so short-lived that it does not cause measurable amounts of glucose to enter the urine, and as such the measurement of urine glucose is integral to the diagnosis to prevent a wrong diagnosis being made. Other signs can also be seen as a result of other underlying diseases that contribute the development or worsening of diabetes. The most common of these diseases are urinary tract infections, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and some hormone diseases, such as hyperthyroidism or Cushing’s disease.

Certain breeds also have a genetic disposition to the condition, such as Siamese and Himalayan cats. Sometimes electro and thermal
therapies are also used, for example, laser and other red light therapies. These help to provide pain relief, reduce swelling and inflammation, improve
muscle tone and promote tissue healing.

Systemically acting corticosteroids may cause polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, particularly during the early stages of therapy. Some corticosteroids may cause sodium and water retention and hypokalaemia in long term use. Systemic corticosteroids have caused deposition of calcium in the skin (calcinosis cutis).

  • Those already receiving maintenance steroid tablets should receive 2mg/kg prednisolone up to a maximum dose of 60mg (6ml).
  • Antihistamine drugs may also be used when cats haven’t responded to other treatments.
  • Attempt to disguise it in their meals and trust that they will consume it while they are dining.
  • Short-term side effects of steroids tablets or capsules can include weight gain, increased appetite, insomnia and mood changes such as feeling irritable or anxious.
  • Steroids are used to treat conditions or diseases such as allergies to food or skin.

The tablets have very little flavour though so it should be possible to give broken up into a little food. Use something which is only ever given as a treat, never a meal, and kept as a special treat. A mashed up prawn works for some cats and these can be kept in the freezer and just one used at a time. Medication is often administered through an inhaler, but can also be given in tablet or injection form.
